Lately, I have been looking to make my first angel investment. I am interested in the following areas -

  1. Particle Accelerators: Built by private sector, not govt funded. I feel that discovery of new physics needs to be democratized.
  2. Quantum Computing: Particularly for predicting atomic Interactions. This will give humans the ability to write computer programs that can design new materials with tailored properties. Right now, new material discovery is based on trial and error. for eg, discovering room-temperature superconductors.
  3. Modernizing food production (Hydroponics): The current food production methods are "toxic", and if we want humanity to live upto its full potential, we need to provide people with high-quality nutrition.

Happy to be the first check in.

My philosophy on private sector Particle Accelerators -

Right now, discovery of new physics is pretty much limited to particle accelerators. However, given this equipment is so expensive & limited, I believe most scientists and ideas would not actually have access to it. Unless you are close to the right person at the right place, you will not get the opportunity to run your experiment on any meaningful size accelerator.

I believe this is a major roadblock to science, and I would argue that discovery of new physics can be accelerated significantly if we were to make these experiments much more accessible.

Imagine if Newton did not have access to a telescope. He would not be able to collect the planetary motion data required to come up with the theory of gravity.

Science is très expensive today, and access to the right equipment is the bottleneck.
